about

At the end of 2010, while in Singapore waiting for Berklee to officially start, I did a short stint at this bar/venue that a friend had started and he kindly gave me a weekly residency. Every month there would be one artist from the States who would come and play. Before I start this long complicated and incredibly eye-roll worthy story, actually let’s not even get into it. Basically the short of it is that he was a recent Berklee graduate and I was about to move a 4 hour drive away from him. Feelings were felt and I thought I already had a boyfriend before even moving to Boston. I was wrong because that’s definitely not what was happening. My innocent, date-retarded brain thought that all the skyping and texts and calls were a sign that we were, or at least going to be in a relationship. Little did I know that this would be the first of many encounters where a boy who acted interested in me but just didn’t have it in them to commit to one person. It’s like a movement that I’m not sure if I support or not.

Anyway, long story long, I would spend weekends in New York with him, learning more about the music scene there and while rehearsing for a show I offered to sing backing vocals on I realised that he had written a song about his ex while we had been, well doing whatever we were doing. I would call it dating but he, simply put, wouldn’t.

Fired up, on the Chinatown bus back to Boston from Manhattan I was on a mission. There’s a lot more to the story but let’s just say this song was about my ex mostly to spite my New York boy. I had most certainly gotten over him at this point (Fun fact, Ben lives in LA right now. But we were never meant to be, as my song suggests) but the words will always be true about how I felt when I felt like I was losing him. (refer to YT song ‘February’).

lyrics

Hello sir I must say you are most peculiar
My momma always said stay away these boys only wanna play.
But there’s something about you
That I wanna play with too
Something about you.

And you’re driving me absolutely crazy
Thinking bout your face
The way we dance around the randomest places
Can’t stop this smile that’s crawled onto my lips
It’s been too long since we’ve kissed
And I miss you
Don’t go away
Is what I would say
If it meant that you’d stay.

Who are we kiddin
We started all wrong from the beginning
But I am likin this uncertainty
But everything is telling me to run
Me to run.

(chorus)

Oh and now you’re gone
And all that’s left are the tears that you
Refused to hear
And I’ll pretend that I’m strong
But really I’m dying to wake up again in your arms.
Again in your arms

You’re driving me absolutely crazy
And it’s been a year
Since your love since my last fallen tear
Still catch myself smiling
And I know it’s weird
I guess I wish you were here.
